NIST's Information Technology Laboratory has awarded Dr. Aylin Caliskan a one-year, $192,000 grant for 2021, as a single principal investigator. The grant is for the project “Quantifying and Explaining Human-like Biases in Artificial Intelligence's Visual Semantics.” The project will seek answers for research questions on how humans and machines learn bias from visual data in the presence and absence of natural language. The expected outcome at the end of 2021 is an AI bias analytics framework for computer vision systems that provides a foundation for fairness enhancing technologies to help make Fair Information Practices (FIP) and anti-discriminatory regulation a reality for policymakers as well as AI developers, users, and subjects.
